What is the Prostate & How Does it Work?
As a man, your prostate can go unnoticed your whole life until you reach a certain age. All of a sudden, you’re making annual visits to the doctor to check up on the health of your prostate, and you may be experiencing some of the symptoms that come with an aging prostate. While there are solutions for improving these symptoms and returning to a better quality of life, do one thing first: read on to learn important information about what the prostate is and how it works. After all, this small gland is responsible for a huge portion of your quality of life!

What is the prostate?
The prostate is a small gland about the size of a walnut, chestnut or apricot that is part of the male reproductive system. Glands are organs in human or animal bodies that secrete a particular chemical substance for use in the body or for discharge. The prostate gland’s essential function is producing a fluid that makes up semen. Learn more about this essential function later in this article. Weighing in at less than one ounce, the prostate is a tiny gland with major impacts on a man’s health, including his physical, mental and sexual wellness. If the prostate isn’t healthy, chances are you’re experiencing the effects in more than one area of your life.

Where is the prostate located?
The prostate is located in the male reproductive system below the bladder, which stores urine. The prostate gland surrounds part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder and carries sperm from the testicles. The prostate is positioned above the muscles of the pelvic floor and in front of the rectum, making it possible for physicians to feel the gland from the rectum. Next, you will discover why this positioning of the prostate puts you at risk for developing complications as you age.

What is the prostate made of?
The tissue surrounding the prostate gland contains smooth muscle fibers and elastic connective tissue. The inside of the prostate is also made up of smooth muscle cells. Prostate tissue is characterized by its three different zones, which surround the urethra in layers. The transition zone is the smallest and is found on the inside of the gland, surrounding the upper third of the urethra between the bladder and the penis. The transition zone is where the prostate tends to experience changes due to age. These changes cause the tissue to press against the bladder and the urethra, making urination more difficult. The central zone makes up one fourth of the prostate and is where the seminal duct, or ejaculatory duct, and the seminal vesicles are found. The peripheral zone is the third and largest zone in the prostate, making up nearly three fourths of the tissue mass. The peripheral zone is typically where men may experience more serious prostate problems that require medical attention. Visit your doctor annually after age 50 to have your prostate examined for serious changes.

What does the prostate do?
The most important function of the prostate is producing a fluid that makes up semen. This thin milky liquid helps to nourish and protect sperm. During ejaculation, the prostate muscles forcefully push this prostatic fluid into the urethra, where it is then mixed with millions of sperm from the testicles which have been carried into the urethra through tubes called the vas deferens. Semen is also made of secretions from another gland in the reproductive system called the bulbourethral gland. Prostatic secretions are important for fertility in men since they contribute to proper functioning of sperm cells. The liquid also contains an enzyme to thin out semen, called the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Doctors can run a test on this enzyme called a PSA exam, to determine if your prostate is showing any abnormalities.

The prostate also contributes to healthy urinary function, since the gland wraps around the urethra which allows for the flow of urine from the bladder to the penis. The urethra is responsible for carrying both semen and urine out of the body through the penis. To prevent semen from entering the bladder during ejaculation, the prostate and the bladder’s sphincter muscle close the urethra up to the bladder. Furthermore, to prevent urine from entering the prostate seminal ducts, the prostate muscles close the seminal ducts during urination.

What issues are related to aging prostate health?
For many men, prostate health is a priority as they reach a certain age. This is due to common urinary tract symptoms like frequent urination and incomplete bladder emptying that present themselves due to changes in the prostate.

While a healthy lifestyle incorporating a good diet, plenty of exercise and low stress can help prevent some of these symptoms, there are ways to support a healthy prostate with naturally based ingredients in a supplement.
